3 Days in Shanghai: A Thoughtful First-Timer Itinerary

A well-paced three-day introduction to Shanghai, combining the Bund, Yu Garden, local neighbourhoods, cultural stops and modern Pudong.

By Shanghai Welcome ·

How to use this itinerary

Three days is enough to experience Shanghai's classic views, its lived-in neighbourhoods and its modern skyline without treating the city as a checklist. Keep travel times, meal breaks and your hotel location in mind when choosing each day's pace.

Day 1: The classic Shanghai story

Begin by the Bund, where the historic waterfront faces the Pudong skyline. Continue toward Nanjing Road before taking a relaxed lunch break.

In the afternoon, explore Yu Garden and the old city. A tea stop or time around the bazaar gives the day a more local rhythm. If you enjoy evenings out, finish with a Huangpu River cruise or a riverside dinner.

Day 1 is also the smartest day to book a private guide. Instead of spending the morning hunting for a SIM card and struggling with Alipay setup, your guide sorts eSIM activation, links your card to Alipay and WeChat Pay, and teaches you a handful of Mandarin phrases in the first hour. Then they walk you through the Bund, Yu Garden and the old city with stories that bring every building to life. You finish Day 1 oriented, payment-ready and confident for Days 2 and 3 on your own.

  • The Bund and its skyline views
  • Nanjing Road at your own pace
  • Yu Garden, old city lanes and tea
  • Optional Huangpu River evening

Book this as your Day 1. Your guide starts at your hotel with eSIM activation, Alipay and WeChat Pay setup, and a quick Mandarin lesson — then walks you through six centuries of Shanghai from a Ming garden to the Bund and a Huangpu River night cruise. Private vehicle, English-speaking guide, admissions, lunch and bottled water all included.

Day 2: Culture and neighbourhoods

Choose a museum visit in the morning, then shift to the former French Concession for lunch and an afternoon of tree-lined streets, shikumen architecture, cafés and independent shops.

Tianzifang and Xintiandi work well as flexible stops: linger where the atmosphere suits you, or let your guide suggest quieter lanes and local stories nearby.

  • Shanghai Museum or another cultural collection
  • A relaxed French Concession lunch
  • Tianzifang, Xintiandi and local lanes
  • Time for cafés, design and neighbourhood life

Day 3: Modern Shanghai and a gentle finale

Use the final day for Pudong: Shanghai Tower, Lujiazui and the riverside promenade offer a different perspective on the city. On a clear day, an observation deck gives a memorable sense of Shanghai's scale.

If your onward journey allows, replace part of the day with Zhujiajiao Water Town or keep it simple with a final local meal and a smooth private transfer.

  • Shanghai Tower and Lujiazui
  • A riverside walk in Pudong
  • Optional Zhujiajiao extension
  • Private airport or railway transfer

Make it your own

This is a starting point, not a fixed group-tour schedule. Swap stops, slow the pace, add a tea ceremony or breakfast experience, and shape the three days around what you want to understand about Shanghai.

If you prefer a fully personalized experience, our private guides build each day around your interests — whether that means deeper dives into architecture, longer food explorations, or a Zhujiajiao water town day trip instead of Pudong. Private car, English-speaking guide, all admissions, meals and transport included.
