A Thousand Orchids Just Opened in a Hongkou Mall, and It Might Be the Calmest Hour in Shanghai This Week

The 2026 Shanghai Orchid Exhibition opens this weekend inside a Hongkou flower market tucked into a riverside mall — more than a thousand orchids, free to wander, with hands-on workshops. It is the kind of quiet, local pleasure most visitors never hear about.

The flower show hiding inside a shopping mall

Shanghai has a habit of keeping its gentler pleasures indoors. From October 23 to 25, the 2026 Shanghai Orchid Exhibition (上海兰花大会) opens inside Ether Bloom (蔚冉生长花鸟市), a year-round flower and bird market set into Ruihong Moon Bay (瑞虹天地月亮湾) — a riverside mall in Hongkou that most first-time visitors never reach. More than a thousand orchids will be arranged through the indoor garden, an easy, climate-controlled counterpoint to the city's louder autumn spectacles.

The show is built by Xintiandi's nature-lifestyle brand Ether Bloom, which has been quietly turning the old idea of a花鸟市场 — a traditional flower, bird and fish market — into something a neighborhood actually lives in. You do not need a ticket or a plan. You walk in, the air smells of soil and leaves, and a thousand orchids are suddenly in front of you.

  • •Free to browse; no ticket required

What you will actually see

This is not a single wall of identical blooms. The exhibition gathers specialist nurseries and plant brands — TOPFLOWER, Wanfeng Green Edge, Sheena Orchids and others — showcasing the families that make orchids the largest group of flowering plants on earth: phalaenopsis (蝴蝶兰), the slipper orchids known as paphiopedilum (兜兰), cattleya (卡特兰), oncidium (文心兰), vanda (万代兰), alongside the more restrained Chinese classics grouped as 国兰. There are also new hybrids bred for the home, so the range runs from the familiar supermarket phalaenopsis to shapes you may never have seen.

For a visitor, the pleasure is in the detail. Phalaenopsis is the easy, enduring favourite; the slipper orchids are the odd ones with a little pouch for a lip; cattleya carries the big, theatrical flowers; vanda is the tropical showpiece that Singapore made its national flower. You can wander the stalls, talk to the growers about care, and pick out a plant to take home — a souvenir that is alive, and far lighter than another shopping-bag of trinkets.

The workshops worth planning around

Each day of the show has a small, guided workshop, and they are the part that turns looking into doing. On Friday (October 23, 15:00–16:00) it is orchid potting — building your own组合 from flower to vessel. On Saturday (October 24, 11:00–12:00) it is mounting, where an orchid is taken out of its pot and fixed to a board to grow as a living, three-dimensional plant picture. On Sunday (October 25, 11:00–12:00) it is a terrarium workshop, building a tiny rainforest in a bottle for a jewel orchid.

Around the market there is also a playful '兜兜乐' game — toss a sack, win an autumn gift such as a dendrobium tea kit, a limited fridge magnet or a woven tote — and a stall serving dendrobium (铁皮石斛) wellness tea. None of it is grand. All of it is the sort of slow, tactile afternoon that survives in a city better known for speed.

  • •Fri Oct 23: orchid potting, 15:00–16:00
  • •Sat Oct 24: orchid mounting, 11:00–12:00
  • •Sun Oct 25: terrarium workshop, 11:00–12:00
  • •Dendrobium wellness tea and a small game on site

How to make an afternoon of it

Ruihong Moon Bay sits in a Hongkou neighborhood that has been rebuilt from old lane housing into open malls, waterways and plazas — a good place to feel how Shanghai renews itself without erasing the everyday. Arrive mid-morning, walk the indoor garden slowly, join a workshop if the timing fits, then step outside to the surrounding streets and canals for coffee. Line 10 to Youdian Xincun (邮电新村) puts you within a short walk.

If you would like the city's living neighborhoods placed in a wider story, a private guided day tour threads Hongkou and the old-meets-new districts together — an English-speaking guide and a comfortable vehicle, so you can wander a flower market in the morning and understand the streets around it by the afternoon.

A private heritage day tour that connects the city's old and new districts — an easy way to pair a slow morning at the orchid market with the wider story of how Shanghai's neighborhoods grew.

Our planning note

The orchid show is the headline this weekend, but it sits inside a wider, quieter season. The 52nd Zuibai Chi Chrysanthemum Exhibition (醉白池菊展) is running in Songjiang through November 15, with more than 11,000 pots across a classical garden; and the Shanghai Chrysanthemum Show at Gongqing Forest Park (共青森林公园) opens October 24 and runs to November 29. Taken together, the city is having a soft, floral autumn — no crowds to fight, no ticket to pre-book.

Go for the orchids, stay for the calm. It is a reminder that the best things to do in Shanghai this time of year are often the ones that ask the least of you.

Frequently asked questions

Where and when is the 2026 Shanghai Orchid Exhibition?

It runs October 23 to 25, 2026, at Ether Bloom (蔚冉生长花鸟市) inside Ruihong Moon Bay (瑞虹天地月亮湾), 188 Ruihong Road, Hongkou. The nearest metro is Youdian Xincun on Line 10.

Is there an entry fee?

Browsing the exhibition and market is free. The daily workshops are small and guided, so they may require on-site sign-up or a fee — arrive early if you want a spot.

How long should I plan to spend there?

Plan for one to two hours: a slow walk through the orchid displays, time at the growers' stalls, and perhaps a workshop or a cup of dendrobium tea. It pairs naturally with a wander through the surrounding Hongkou neighborhood afterwards.

What else is in bloom around Shanghai this season?

The Zuibai Chi Chrysanthemum Exhibition in Songjiang runs through November 15, and the Shanghai Chrysanthemum Show at Gongqing Forest Park opens October 24 and runs to November 29 — both easy, low-key additions if you want more autumn flowers.
